A free crypto trading bot is easy to find. A free bot that is also safe, transparent and worth running is harder. This guide compares the main free options in 2026: open-source bots you run yourself, and exchange bots that cost nothing to use. It also explains the costs that "free" usually hides.
What "free" really means
There are two kinds of free trading bot:
- Open-source software. The code is public and free to use under a licence such as GPL, MIT or Apache. You run it on your own computer or server. You pay for the server and exchange fees, but nobody charges a subscription and you can read exactly what the bot does.
- Free bots inside an exchange. Some exchanges, such as Pionex, offer grid and DCA bots at no extra charge. The exchange earns from your trading fees, and your funds stay on that exchange.
Be wary of a third kind: "free" bots promoted on social media or Telegram that ask you to deposit funds with them, share your password, or install unknown software. Those are a common route to scams. A legitimate bot never needs your exchange password or withdrawal permission.

| OctoBot | Open source, self-hosted | GPL-3.0 | Python | Beginners who want a web interface and presets |

1. Freqtrade: best all-round free bot
Freqtrade is the most widely used open-source crypto bot, with tens of thousands of stars on GitHub. Strategies are Python files, and it ships with the strongest free testing toolkit of any option here: backtesting, hyperparameter optimisation, dry-run, look-ahead bias checks and an optional machine-learning module, FreqAI.
- Exchanges: Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, Gate, Kraken, Hyperliquid and more.
- Control: Telegram, a built-in web UI or the command line.
- Learning curve: moderate. You need to edit a config file and ideally read some Python.
We publish backtests of 27 freqtrade strategies on identical data, which is a quick way to see what the free community strategies can and cannot do. Start with our Docker installation guide.
2. Hummingbot: best for market making
Hummingbot focuses on market making (placing buy and sell orders around the current price to earn the spread) and arbitrage between exchanges. It connects to many centralised and decentralised exchanges. It suits traders who understand order books and inventory risk. It is less suited to classic indicator-based strategies.
3. Jesse: best for strategy research in Python
Jesse is a framework for writing, backtesting and optimising strategies with a clean, simple Python API. Researchers like it for readable code and accurate backtests. Check the project's current documentation for which live-trading features are free and which are paid.
4. OctoBot: friendliest open-source option
OctoBot provides a web interface, preset strategies such as grid and DCA, and optional paid cloud hosting. The self-hosted version is free and open source. It is a reasonable starting point if a terminal-first tool like freqtrade feels intimidating.
5. Superalgos: visual strategy building
Superalgos takes a visual, node-based approach to designing strategies and charts, with a strong community focus. It is powerful but has a steep learning curve and needs a capable computer.
6. Pionex: free bots without running anything
Pionex is an exchange with built-in bots. The bots cost nothing extra and reviews list spot fees of 0.05% per side. The trade-off is that your funds must stay on Pionex and you are limited to its preset bot types. Availability depends on your country. Our comparison of freqtrade, 3Commas, Pionex and Cryptohopper goes into detail.
The hidden costs of a free trading bot
Server. A self-hosted bot must run 24/7. A small VPS costs a few dollars a month; see our VPS guide.
Trading fees. A bot that trades many times a day can pay more in fees than it earns. Every result on our leaderboard includes a 0.1% fee on each side for this reason.
Your time. Setup, updates and monitoring take hours, especially at the start.
Strategy risk. This is the biggest one. Free software does not come with a profitable strategy. In our test, none of 27 community freqtrade strategies beat simply holding Bitcoin over two years, and more than half lost money.
How to choose
- You want to test ideas properly and keep full control: freqtrade.
- You want to market-make or run arbitrage: Hummingbot.
- You are a Python developer focused on research: Jesse or freqtrade.
- You want a friendly interface: OctoBot.
- You only want a grid or DCA bot with no setup: Pionex.
Safety checklist for any trading bot
- Download open-source bots only from their official GitHub repositories.
- Create exchange API keys with trading only. Never enable withdrawals.
- Restrict API keys to your server's IP address.
- Use a dedicated sub-account with a limited balance.
- Backtest, then run in dry-run or paper mode for several weeks.
- Never pay someone who promises guaranteed profits.
Frequently asked questions
Are free crypto trading bots safe? Reputable open-source bots such as freqtrade and Hummingbot are widely reviewed and safe to run if you download them from official sources and use API keys without withdrawal permission. The risk is mainly in the strategy and settings, not the software.
Can a free trading bot make money? It can, but most free sample strategies do not beat buy-and-hold. Our backtests of 27 freqtrade strategies show a wide range of results, with more than half losing money over two years.
What is the best free AI trading bot? Freqtrade's FreqAI module is the most complete free option. It trains machine-learning models on your chosen indicators and retrains them as new data arrives. It needs more computing power and experience than a regular strategy.
Do I need to know how to code? Not for Pionex or OctoBot's presets. For freqtrade, Jesse and Hummingbot, basic Python and comfort with a terminal make a big difference.
Is a free bot better than 3Commas or Cryptohopper? Free open-source bots give more control and no subscription. Paid platforms are easier to set up and offer support. Our comparison guide covers the trade-offs.
Ready to connect an exchange?
Freqtrade needs an exchange account with API access. Bybit supports both spot and futures in freqtrade and offers a demo mode for testing.
